Taiwan’s delegation to the World Trade Organization (WTO) has been chosen to chair the WTO import licensing committee. That’s the word from foreign ministry official John C.C. Lai on Tuesday.
Lai said Taiwan has held chairmen positions at WTO-related agencies in the last three consecutive years.
"Since joining the WTO, which is an important international organization, we have been encouraging our colleagues to participate in more WTO related work, especially in committees,"said Lai.
"Doing so will help them receive more training, hone their skills, and enhance Taiwan’s presence in the international community.”
Since 2013, Taiwan has taken up chairman positions at committees on civil aircraft, rules of origin and protective measures.
Meanwhile, the foreign ministry plans to strengthen Taiwan’s economic diplomacy. Lai said this year, the ministry will invite foreign representatives based in Taiwan to visit local free economic pilot zones and key industries. The focus for 2015 is sustainable development of green products. The first visit will be to the low carbon emission project at the offshore island of Penghu in May.
