Think tank raises Taiwan's 2015 GDP growth projection to 3.7%

The Taiwan Institute of Economic Research has raised its projection for Taiwan’s economic growth in 2015.

The Taipei-based think tank said on Friday that it now expects Taiwan’s GDP to grow 3.7% this year. That’s up 0.03 percentage points from its previous forecast in January. The revised projection remains the highest among Taiwan’s leading think tanks. However, director of the think tank’s macroeconomic forecasting center, Gordon Sun, said the economic outlook will become clearer by the third quarter.

“The US, which had been the sole engine of the global economy, seemed to have encountered some headwind, but at the same time, Europe and Japan are doing better than last year, so it’s difficult to interpret the outlook," said Sun.

"We’ll probably have to wait until the third quarter for the outlook to become clearer."
