Ruling Kuomintang (KMT) chairman Eric Chu is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 4. That’s the word from KMT spokesperson Yang Wei-chung on Friday.

Chu will be leading a delegation to attend a cross-strait economic and cultural forum in Shanghai on May 3 which is sponsored by the KMT and the Communist Party of China (CPC). Issues to be discussed in the forum will include small- and medium-sized businesses, the youth and the grass roots, trade and technology, and culture and education.

After the forum, Chu’s delegation will go to Beijing and meets with the Chinese leader. Yang said the KMT chairman and the Chinese leader are expected to exchange views on cross-strait issues.

Meanwhile, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman Ma Xiaoguang also confirmed the scheduled meeting. Ma called the high-level exchanges between the KMT and the CPC “important.”

While in Beijing, the KMT chairman will also hold a seminar with students from Peking University before visiting the cenotaph commemorating Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China. The Republic of China is Taiwan’s official name.
