Taiwan has been invited to attend the upcoming World Health Assembly (WHA) as an observer. The WHA is the decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Minister of Health and Welfare Chiang Been-huang will lead a Taiwanese delegation to Geneva to attend the meeting slated for May 18-26. The theme of this year’s meeting is a flexible and adaptable health system.

Taiwan began to participate in the WHA as an observer under the name “Chinese Taipei” in 2009. The country had previously been barred from attending the proceedings because of opposition from China. China sees Taiwan as part of its territory, even though the two sides have been ruled separately for more than 60 years.
