On this day in 1759, English statesman William Pitt the Younger was born. He became prime minister at the age of 24, the youngest-ever British prime minister.

On this day in 1934, the world’s first surviving quintuplets were born . Cecile, Emilie, Marie, Annette and Yvonne Dionne were born to Olivia Dionne in Callender, Canada.

On this day in 1959, the United States launched its Jupiter rocket into space with two monkeys aboard. The monkeys returned to earth safely, opening the way for manned space flight.

On this day in 1966, the Cultural Revolution began in Mainland China after the central committee of the Chinese Communist Party set up a "central cultural revolution group" to lead the movement.
