The presidential candidate for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Tsai Ing-wen is expounding on her China policy of maintaining the status quo. That’s after President Ma Ying-jeou on Wednesday publicly questioned exactly what Tsai’s China policy entails during his visit to the Mainland Affairs Council.
Tsai said on Wednesday that she already explained on April 15 maintaining the status quo means maintaining cross-strait peace and stable development of cross-strait ties. She said 74% of the public supports this stance.
She also explained how she plans to achieve this:
"We think that maintaining the status quo means communication and this must be in accordance with Taiwan’s democratic process," said Tsai. "We need to seek the consensus of the Taiwan people. As to facing problems, we need to resolve them one by one. We need to keep good communication with all parties outside [of Taiwan]. That’s how we can narrow our differences and maintain stability."
Tsai will run for president on the opposition DPP ticket. The ruling Kuomintang has yet to nominate its presidential candidate.
