Economics ministry: we must discuss trade in goods agreement with the public
A public hearing on the cross-strait trade in goods agreement

China and Taiwan are in negotiations over a trade in goods agreement. Economics official Lu Cheng-hua said on Tuesday that the ministry is planning to discuss the agreement with students and other sectors in society.

This past February and March saw 14 public hearings about the cross-strait trade in services agreement. But that was mostly with people in affected industries.

The legislature was recently occupied for over 3 weeks by students who opposed the lack of monitoring of cross-strait agreements.

Lu said that recent protests were not against the trade in services or trade in good agreements with China but rather the controversial review process. He said that the process of reviewing these cross-strait agreements must be very comprehensive. It is necessary to have a dialogue with the public. If not, it will appear as if the government only cares about industries and not public opinion.
