Kerry: Taiwan is important trade and security partner for US

US Secretary of State John Kerry has reaffirmed the importance of the unofficial US-Taiwan relationship.

Kerry was responding to written questions by Chairman of the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs Ed Royce on the United States’ Taiwan policy.

In his response, Kerry said that Taiwan is an important factor in the United States’ Asia-Pacific policy, including the country’s “Pivot to Asia”. Kerry wrote that that the US regards Taiwan as an important security partner. He also noted that Taiwan is the United States’ tenth largest trading partner.

Kerry wrote that he hopes to see US-Taiwan trade relations develop further under the banner of the United States’ Trade and Investment Framework Agreement with Taiwan. He also welcomed Taiwan’s interest in joining the US-led Trans Pacific Partnership.
