Taiwan dropped one place to 12th in the latest ranking of expatriate pay packages in the Asia-Pacific. That’s according to a survey which consultancy firm ECA International released this past week.
In contrast, China rose to fourth place, overtaking Hong Kong.
The survey found that the expatriate salary packages in Taiwan are among the lowest in the region. The average total expatriate pay package for middle managers was about US$234,000 per year.
The Asian regional director at ECA International, Lee Quane, said that the reason for the lower pay packages in Taiwan has to do with cheaper accommodation and international schooling when compared to other countries in the region.
He said it costs companies about half as much to provide employee benefits in Taiwan as it does in places like Hong Kong.
In comparison, Japan has the highest expatriate pay packages in Asia, according to the survey. The average for an expatriate middle manager was US$375,000.
ECA said that more than 320 companies took part in the survey covering 167 countries and over 10,000 international assignees.
