US Official: renewable energy promotes regional stability

US senior official Robert Wang says the development of renewable energy can bring regional stability and lower political and economic risks. Wang was speaking at a conference on energy issues in Taipei. Wang has 30 years of experience in dealing with Asia Pacific issues.

He said renewable energy, like solar energy and wind power, is sustainable and freely available. Every country should develop the kind of green energy that suits its resources. Wang said, “Every country around the world has access to some form of renewable resources, whether it is solar, wind or geothermal.” He said, “What we need is the technology and the facility to utilize these renewable energy sources.”

Wang also said green energy is not like fossil fuel which can be controlled by a certain country and become a political tool. Every country can use fossil fuel, but they can also use renewable energy to decrease political and economic risks and promote regional stability.

Taiwan has increased its target for its renewable energy capacity from the current 10,000 megawatts to 30,000 megawatts by 2030.
