One night of heavy rain has brought great relief and stopped the water rationing measures in northern Taiwan. Taoyuan and parts of New Taipei City and Hsinchu have had their water cut for two days a week since April 8. Taiwan has been battling its worst drought in decades.
Rain in the recent week has gradually helped the water level at the reservoir to rise. The heavy overnight rain on Monday night brought the water level to over 30%. That means that residents can now enjoy tap water every day of the week.
The Water Resources Agency said starting Tuesday, the areas served by the reservoir would go back to the 2nd stage of water rationing measures. Large industrial users will have their water supply cut by 5% while major non-industrial users will have their supply cut by 20%.
Residents and business owners were delighted to hear the news on Tuesday.
