Representative urges Vietnam to compensate Taiwanese firms on anniversary of riots

Taiwan’s representative to Vietnam, Huang Chi-peng, has urged Hanoi to compensate Taiwanese firms for property damage sustained in last year’s anti-China riots.

Huang was speaking on Wednesday, the one year anniversary of the worst rioting.

Vietnamese demonstrations against a Chinese oil platform that entered waters off the disputed Paracel Islands turned violent a year ago today. A large number of Taiwanese-owned factories mistakenly believed to be Chinese were destroyed or damaged in three Vietnamese provinces. A total of 407 Taiwanese companies were affected.

Huang said that local authorities in the provinces where the riots took place have been slow to comply with instructions from Vietnam’s central government. He said that as a result, a number of Taiwanese businesses are still waiting for compensation a year on.

However, Huang said that in the year since the riots broke out, a growing number of Taiwanese businesses have begun operations in Vietnam. He said that this shows the importance Taiwanese businesses place on the Vietnamese market.
