A wetland area in southern Taiwan has been listed by BirdLife International as one of the world’s 12,000 important Bird and Biodiversity Areas.
BirdLife International is the world’s largest partnership of conversation organizations. The recent recognition of Jiading Wetland in Kaohsiung City brings the number of important Bird and Biodiversity Areas in Taiwan to 54.
According to the Taipei-based Chinese Wild Bird Federation, the Jiading Wetland hosts the black-faced spoonbill, an endangered species that winters in Taiwan. The number of black-faced spoonbills recorded in the wetland area increased between 2010 and 2014. The 2014 figure of 285 was a record high.
