Cabinet spokesperson Sun Lih-chyun says that the Cabinet remains willing to face a proposed referendum on the controversial Fourth Nuclear Power Plant.
Speaking on Thursday, Sun said that the Cabinet’s view on the proposed referendum, spearheaded by the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has not changed. However, Sun also said that the Cabinet has not yet discussed a DPP proposal for a statute that would circumvent the existing Referendum Act.
Supporters of the DPP proposal say that current rules require an excessively high threshold of support before a referendum can pass. The proposed statute stipulates that a simple majority will suffice if a referendum on the nuclear plant goes forward. Sun said the Cabinet does not know anything about the statute’s content.
"Today’s Cabinet meeting did not discuss this issue. First of all, we learned about the proposed statute from the media and we don’t know anything about its contents, so I can’t give any comments," said Sun. "But the Cabinet is willing to face a referendum on the nuclear plant. Our attitude hasn’t changed," he said.
