Taiwan is scheduled to launch a film festival in Europe next week, featuring works by internationally renowned Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien and other Taiwanese directors.
According to the Taiwan Cultural Center in Paris on Friday, the event is set to start from Tuesday. It also said the film festival will be the largest-ever held by Taiwan to showcase the country’s achievements in the film industry at a time when international film critics have expressed admiration for Hou’s latest film The Assassin.
The Assassin is a Tang dynasty martial arts film starring Taiwanese actress Shu Qi and actor Chang Chen. It is one of the 19 entries in the main competition at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival.
Taking advantage of Hou’s fame, the Taiwan Cultural Center said its film festival will start in Belgium, and then go on tour to Switzerland, Luxembourg, Norway, Denmark, France, Spain, and Portugal.
During the event, more than 50 Taiwanese films, including Hou’s works, will be screened. They will cover several important stages of development in Taiwan’s film industry.
