Rainy weather has brought a large amount of water to southern Taiwan, helping to relieve a serious water shortage.
Mountainous areas of Pingtung County saw 1000 mm of rainfall in five days while the rural areas of Kaohsiung saw over 600 mm of water during the same period. On Monday, the Central Weather Bureau issued a warning for torrential rain, saying that rainfall in Kaohsiung and Pingtung may exceed 200 mm on Monday alone.
The rainy weather in Taiwan is likely to continue for the rest of the week as a plum rain front lingers over the island. The unstable weather may last into the weekend, with torrential rains, gusty wind and lightning likely in southern Taiwan.
Though the rain has alleviated drought conditions in the south, it has also caused the closure of some roads and the Alishan train route.
