Legislature Vice President Hung Hsiu-chu will be required to get at least 30% support in a public opinion poll to become the Kuomintang (KMT) candidate in the 2016 presidential election.
Hung became the only candidate that qualified for the party's presidential primary on Monday. She received more than 35,000 endorsements from registered party members. That was well over the threshold of 15,000. The other candidate who registered, former health minister Yaung Chih-liang, did not meet that threshold.
Some polls have shown that those in support of Hung have reached 28%. Hung said she will continue to work hard to reach the 30% mark.
June 13 will be the last day for the public poll. Hung said she hopes the dates for the polling will be pushed back as late as possible because that would be to her advantage. According to regulations, she will start briefings on her political views on Wednesday. She wants to conduct at least 7 to 10 briefings before the public polls take place.
