Taiwan and the Philippines are likely to sign an agreement on maritime law enforcement cooperation soon.
Foreign Minister David Lin made the remarks on Tuesday. He said the two sides have reached a consensus on the wording of the agreement. But the two sides need to further discuss the scope of law enforcement.
Taiwan and the Philippines have been negotiating an agreement on maritime law enforcement cooperation since late 2013. That was one of the steps taken to improve relations after Philippine Coast Guard officers opened fire at a Taiwanese fishing boat. The shooting led to the death of a Taiwanese captain and sparked outrage in Taiwan.
