Health authorities have taken precautions to prevent an outbreak of MERS or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in Taiwan.
The Centers for Disease Control said on Friday that prevention measures include the screening of inbound passengers, mandatory hospitalization of those suspected of having contracted the virus, and health education for the public.
The CDC said hospitals are required to activate a reporting mechanism should screening fail to identify infected passengers.
CDC Deputy Director Chou Jih-haw said that all cases reported in nearby South Korea, including two news cases confirmed Friday, are in-hospital infections. However, the government has decided not to issue a travel warning for South Korea as there is no community infection and the virus poses little threat to Taiwan.
