Opposition leader Tsai Ing-wen’s cross-strait policy was in the spotlight on Saturday, in Los Angeles. Tsai is the head of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party and her party’s presidential candidate for 2016; she arrived in the United States on Friday on a six-city tour.
At a dinner party hosted by Taiwanese expats, Tsai said the focus of her cross-strait policy is to maintain the status quo. She said that maintaining the peaceful and stable development of cross-strait relations will be the main goal of her administration if she's elected president next year.
Tsai also listed the goals of enriching democracy, building an innovative economy, and ensuring justice, in order to strengthen Taiwan.
Earlier in the day, Tsai met with eight US academics in a closed door forum on maintaining the cross-Taiwan Strait status quo.
As for relations with the United States, Tsai said that the two sides share the common language of democracy. She said that the people of Taiwan have the right to choose their own president and future. She said that ensures that the status quo of democracy will not change, and it will enable democracy to become a symbol of Taiwan.
