Taiwan is set to implement a new labeling system for genetically modified food products (GMOs) on July 1. The nation’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made the announcement on Monday.

Under the new rules, GMO labeling will be required not just for packaged foods, but for food additives and unpackaged foods as well. In addition, any food product containing 3% or more GMOs, must be labeled. That’s stricter than the current 5%.

The FDA is calling on the food industry to comply with the new rules. Those who fail to do so will be fined up to US$100,000 and those who provide inaccurate labeling will be fined up to US$133,000.
