Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen is in Chicago on the second leg of a six-city visit to the United States. She arrived in the windy city after spending several days meeting with academics and overseas Taiwanese in Los Angeles.
Tsai spoke in the Hakka dialect during a banquet with overseas Taiwanese in Chicago on Sunday night. That was because many of the participants are speakers of the Hakka language.
“This time I decided to make a special trip to Chicago, and I’m touched by the warm reception," said Tsai.
"I would like to say thank you on behalf of all of the DPP,” she said.
Tsai said that she decided to make a stopover in Chicago, because in the past, her supporters had to travel to Washington DC or New York in order to see her.
Tsai is the first party chairperson and the first DPP presidential candidate to visit Chicago. In addition to the banquet on Sunday, Tsai’s plans also include participating in a youth forum and a tour of the city.
She will travel next to the highlight of her US trip: Washington DC. She’s also scheduled to make stops in New York, Houston and San Francisco before returning to Taiwan on June 9.
