Chairman of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Su Tseng-chang, has urged President Ma Ying-jeou to support the DPP’s proposal for a referendum on a controversial nuclear power plant.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Su said that former DPP chairman Lin Yi-hsiung plans to start a hunger strike to publicize efforts to stop the construction of the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant.
In the post, Su asked Ma to promise that construction on the plant will be halted. Su said that if the president has reservations about stopping construction himself, he should back a DPP proposal for a referendum on the issue and let the public decide.
Su also reiterated the DPP’s position that the referendum should be held under the terms of a special statute. The statute would lower the threshold required to pass a referendum under normal circumstances. Under the terms of the proposed statute, a simple majority in favor would suffice to stop construction on the plant.
