The Ministry of National Defense issued a statement Tuesday saying that it has taken steps to counter the threat of Chinese espionage.
The statement comes after media in Taiwan reported two security breaches at a missile launch site on the coast of southeastern Taiwan.
The breaches took place on May 28 and 29 during Patriot Missile test launches. On May 28, a radar at the launch site picked up an unidentified vessel offshore. The following day, the military was forced to abort a test launch after it discovered signs of a reconnaissance aircraft nearby.
Reports quote one worker at the launch site saying that a Chinese spy had already been to the site, entering Taiwan under the guise of an independent tourist.
Tuesday’s defense ministry statement says that the military was aware of the security threats. According to the statement, the military has standardized procedures in place that can deal with security threats effectively.
