KMT’s Hung fares better than Chu in poll, real test yet to come
Hung Hsiu-chu

A recent China Times poll shows that KMT presidential hopeful Hung Hsiu-chu would fare better than KMT Chairman Eric Chu if either ran in an election against DPP chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen.

The poll shows Chu trailing 10% behind Tsai with only 23% of voters supporting him. Hung, on the other hand, would have 27% support and Tsai 31% if the two women were to run against each other.

But another, more important poll will be the key to determining whether Hung will be eligible to run. Though Hung is currently the only person qualified to run in the KMT primary, party rules still require that she gain 30% support in two upcoming public opinion polls before she can be eligible to run.

Hung said that public support for her was low in the beginning but is now growing.

"This poll is only something to refer to. My hard work is what's most important," said Hung. "I want society to see how responsible and courageous I am. I’m sure that everyone is watching. The support we need is coming from the bottom up. So I’m not going to be too happy or too sad about poll results. I’m just going to work hard."

Hung has already launched a campaign, spending Tuesday shooting videos that she will share on social media.
