Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman and presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen shed more light on her cross-strait policy in Washington DC on Wednesday. Her remarks at a DC think tank – the Center for Strategic and International Studies – were her most in-depth to date.
In a speech called “Taiwan Meeting the Challenges Crafting a Model of New Asian Value,” Tsai said that the people of Taiwan want to maintain the status quo in relations with China. She said that it is important to have long term considerations when it comes to the development of cross-strait ties and that cross-strait policies must go beyond political parties, and be tolerant of different opinions.
Tsai promised to establish consistent, predictable and sustainable cross-strait relations.
“Therefore If elected, I will push for the peaceful and stable development of cross-strait relations in accordance with the will of the Taiwanese people and the existing ROC constitutional order," said Tsai.
Washington DC is the third stop in Tsai’s six-city tour of the United States. She will travel next to New York, Houston and San Francisco before returning to Taiwan on June 9.
