Taiwan and Nauru have inked an agreement designed to counter human trafficking. Taiwan’s Interior Minister Chen Wei-zen and Nauruan Justice Minister David Adeang signed the agreement on Monday.
Chen said that human trafficking is a serious crime that cannot be stopped unilaterally. He said that the US State Department has given Taiwan top marks in its annual report on human trafficking for the past five years. South Korea is the only other Asian country the report has awarded with “Tier 1” status in recognition of its efforts to fight human trafficking.
Chen said that since 2011, Taiwan has signed agreements and MOU’s with a number of countries to combat human trafficking. These include Mongolia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Paraguay, the United States and Japan. Nauru is the 14th country to sign such an agreement with Taiwan.
