Veteran US diplomat Kin Moy is set to arrive in Taiwan on Monday. He will take over as director of the Taipei Office of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).
AIT is the de facto US embassy in Taiwan in the absence of formal diplomatic relations between the two sides.
On Sunday, AIT posted a short video on its Facebook page featuring Moy and his family. The video includes brief remarks by Moy in Mandarin Chinese. He speaks about how Taiwan and the United States have worked to build an enduring partnership, and that “the next few years will be an important time in the history of our friendship.”
Kin Moy’s most recent assignment was deputy assistant secretary of state in the US State Department's Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. He was responsible for relations with China, Mongolia, and Taiwan. He will be the first person of Chinese decent to head AIT’s Taipei Office.
In a press release on Friday, AIT said that the outgoing director, Christopher Marut, had concluded his three-year tenure and left Taiwan. In the statement, Marut thanked the people of Taiwan for a rewarding three years.
