Sean Lien, the son of former Vice President Lien, will represent the ruling party, the Kuomintang (KMT), in Taipei's mayoral election in November.
On Saturday the 44-year-old rising political star beat 59-year-old veteran lawmaker Ting Shou-chung and city councilor Chung Hsiao-ping in a primary and officially became the KMT's candidate. Lien is running for public office for the first time.
Lien seeking to succeed Hau Lung-bin, who will have served a maximum of two four-year terms as mayor. The citizens of Taipei have always picked a KMT member as their mayor in the last 20 years except in 1994, when Democratic Progressive Party candidate Chen Shui-bian won the election thanks to a split KMT vote.
