Lien seeking to succeed Hau Lung-bin, who will have served a maximum of two four-year terms as mayor. The citizens of Taipei have always picked a KMT member as their mayor in the last 20 years except in 1994, when Democratic Progressive Party candidate Chen Shui-bian won the election thanks to a split KMT vote.
