KMT agrees to discuss DPP’s nuclear referendum proposal

The ruling party, the Kuomintang (KMT), says it is willing to discuss a nuclear referendum proposed by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

The DPP’s proposal for a special referendum on the controversial fourth nuclear power plant has been criticized by the government because it only requires a simple majority for a referendum to pass. But supporters of the DPP proposal say that current rules require an excessively high threshold.

Construction of the fourth nuclear power plant began in 1999 but remains incomplete. Opponents of the plant say it is located in an earthquake-prone area. A series of accidents during construction have also raised safety concerns.

In a press conference on Saturday, the DPP called on the ruling party to support its special referendum proposal. In response, the KMT said that the threshold stipulated in the DPP proposal is too low. However, the KMT said it is willing to discuss the DPP proposal in a legislative committee meeting.
