KMT’s Hung says she wants peace pact with China
Hung Hsiu-chu

Kuomintang (KMT) presidential hopeful Hung Hsiu-chu said she will sign a peace agreement with China if she is elected. She was speaking about her cross-strait and energy policies at a press conference on Wednesday.

Hung also criticized the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as having only the platforms of Taiwan independence and opposition to nuclear power. She said that DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen’s China policy of “maintaining the status quo” actually aims to further the cause of Taiwan independence.

"I want to tell everyone here that compromises are no use," said Hung. "We need to take on this major responsibility. So when the DPP pretends to want to maintain the status quo, their hidden agenda is Taiwan independence. We want to sign a cross-strait peace treaty to ensure peace, national security and the expansion of our international space."

She also said that this peace pact would bring more business opportunities and give Taiwan greater economic competitiveness.

Hung said her energy policy would be to increase green energy and reduce carbon emissions. She said that reducing nuclear energy use would come after making sure other energy options are safe.
