KMT’s Hung looking to bolster support ahead of polls
Legislature Vice President Hung Hsiu-chu

Legislature Vice President Hung Hsiu-chu is looking to increase support for her bid to represent the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) in the 2016 presidential elections. Hung is the only person who registered to run in the KMT’s presidential primary. Now she has to garner at least 30% support in a series of opinion polls on Friday and Saturday.

The polls will be conducted by three organizations, with over 1,200 valid responses each. They will give equal weight to two questions. One of the questions pits Hung against the main opposition candidate – Democratic Progressive Party Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen. The other will gauge Hung’s overall support. She must garner at least 30% support in the polls.

Hung said Friday that she was feeling positive about her chances.

"I always say I’m cautiously optimistic and that I have confidence. I hope that the poll results can be higher in order to give confidence to my supporters," Hung said.

When asked on Friday whether she was concerned that the KMT would not choose her even if she garners 30% in the opinion polls, Hung said she has confidence in her party. She said that even if some members don’t agree, KMT Chairman Eric Chu has the wisdom to convince them.
