Opposition presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen congratulated Legislature Vice President Hung Hsiu-chu on Sunday, after Hung took one step closer to securing the nomination of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT).
Tsai, who is the chairwoman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), said she hoped that together the two candidates could create a new election culture in Taiwan.
While many were anticipating a presidential election with two female candidates, Tsai said on Sunday that it was more than just that.
“This is not just a race between two women,” she said. “If we can together create a new election culture, and cleaner elections for Taiwan, free of verbal abuse, discrediting one another, and spreading rumors, I believe it will be a more meaningful presidential election.”
Tsai also pointed out that both she and Hung support lowering the voting age from 20 to 18 years old in Taiwan. Tsai said she hoped that the ruling and opposition parties can work together in the last several days of the current legislative session to push forward legislation to make that possible.
