Crime down, but more vigilance needed: Ma
President awards model officers

President Ma Ying-jeou says that Taiwan’s crime rate has fallen and that satisfaction with public security has risen. He was speaking Monday at an event marking Police Day. However, during his remarks, Ma also said that law enforcement suffers from what he called “blind spots”, which he said must be addressed.

Ma said that one area in need of improvement is security at schools. He said that the recent murder of a student at a Taipei school has exposed weak points in law enforcement.

Ma said that he has visited elementary schools to see how security measures are implemented there. He said he believes that volunteer groups such as community patrols can reduce the likelihood of further attacks on students. However, he also said that preventing crime is a duty the government must perform with vigilance.
