Taipei mayor meets with opposition leader to discuss nuclear power
Face-to-face

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin met with the head of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Su Tseng-chang, on Sunday to discuss Taiwan’s controversial fourth nuclear power plant. They held a joint press conference following their talks.

The fourth nuclear power plant has been under construction for more than a decade. But construction has been stalled many times due to public opposition and safety concerns.

Hau and Su shared their views on the nuclear plant during a one-hour meeting. Su said he wants the legislature to consider a bill put forward by his party, which would change the referendum law to allow a simple majority vote on whether the controversial 4th nuclear power plant project should be abandoned.

Hau said that while he cannot support the DPP's proposal, he will convey Su's views to KMT Chairman Ma Ying-jeou and other leaders of the ruling party. The mayor also reiterated that he is against putting the plant into operation until it has been proven safe.
