Green power purchases top government goal

Pledges by institutions and individuals to purchase green power from state-owned Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) have far exceeded a goal set by the government for 2015. That’s after several business heavyweights announced their participation in the program.

According to the Bureau of Energy on Friday, enterprises and individuals in Taiwan have pledged to buy 16.53 million kilowatt hours in green power as of June 15. The green power purchase program was launched in February and aims to raise renewable energy consumption and cut carbon dioxide emissions in the country. The purchase program has set a goal of 10 million kilowatt hours in green power in 2015.

Taipower has collected green power, produced through renewable electricity-generating facilities such as solar panels and windmills, from the state-owned company, private enterprises, and individuals. So far 784 million kilowatt hours of green energy are available.

The latest data show that a total of 774 enterprises and 883 individuals have signed up to the green power purchase program.
