May unemployment hits 15-year low

The government’s statistics office released new figures on Monday showing that the unemployment rate in May was the lowest for that month in 15 years.

Statistics showed that the jobless rate fell slightly from the previous month, shedding 0.01 points to 3.62%.

When broken down in terms of level of education, the lowest unemployment rate – 2.60% -- was seen among people with a junior high education or less. Those with a university education or higher saw an unemployment rate in May of 4.47%.

In terms of age, the highest unemployment rate was among people between 15 and 24 years of age. For that group, the jobless rate stood at 11.18%. That’s as compared with 3.85% unemployment for people between 25 and 44, and 1.92% for those between 45 and 64.
