Food industry’s self-regulation crucial to food safety: Premier
Premier Mao

Premier Mao Chi-kuo is calling on Taiwan’s food industry to self-regulate in order to ensure food safety. Mao was speaking on Monday at the 2015 EU-Taiwan Food Safety Seminar.

The seminar marks the opening of Food Safety Week, a government-sponsored drive aimed at cracking down on tainted food products and ensuring food safety.

Mao said self-regulation is crucial to Taiwan’s food safety as are government assistance and public monitoring.

An EU health and food safety official, Eric Marin, shared the EU’s experience at the seminar. He said that the European Union has the world’s strictest food safety standards.

Marin also said the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), set up in 2002, places an emphasis on scientific data and is tasked with risk analysis and crisis management. Marin said the EFSA serves as a channel of communication for EU member countries.
