The ruling Kuomintang’s (KMT) presidential hopeful Hung Hsiu-chu is calling on China to recognize the existence of the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan.
In a radio interview on Monday, Hung said that “bottlenecks” have surfaced in the Taiwan Strait since the two sides reached the so-called “’92 Consensus” in 1992. That consensus was that the two sides agree that there is “one China” with different interpretations. She said that China must face up to Taiwan’s “political status.”
Hung also called for a peace agreement with China. However, she said the agreement must be in line with the constitution and based on the principles of equality, peace, and dignity. Hung said she would only sign such an agreement if there was public support and a consensus with the opposition.
Hung urged China not to repeat its “one China” rhetoric. She said that Taiwan does not belong to the People’s Republic of China, nor will Taiwan forgo its independent sovereignty.
She said that the use of force to solve disputes and changing the island’s constitutional system are both unacceptable.
