The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) is monitoring tropical storm Kujira, which has formed in the South China Sea. Forecaster Chen Po-jung spoke on Monday about the latest developments.
“Right now the tropical storm is located about 250km south southeast of [China’s] Hainan Island, at a distance of about 1,000km away from Taiwan, so it will not have a direct impact on Taiwan," said Chen.
"However, central and southern Taiwan, the outlying islands of Penghu and Kinmen, and waters to the southeast could also see massive waves," he said. "So boats operating in those waters, and people along the coastline should take precautions. The storm is predicted to move in the direction of Hainan Island, so people traveling to the southern Chinese provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi, Hainan Island, and Hong Kong, and the surrounding areas should stay up-to-date on the latest forecasts.”
Chen said that as the storm moves northward, it will bring cloudy weather and precipitation to Taiwan. He said there is a chance of occasional showers and thundershowers throughout Monday in southern and southeastern Taiwan. Chen said the rest of Taiwan could see afternoon thundershowers.
