President Ma Ying-jeou says ties between Taiwan and Burkina Faso are stable. Ma was speaking Tuesday in Taipei during his meeting with Prime Minister Yacouba Isaac Zida of the interim government.
Ma said the two sides have had diplomatic ties for the past 21 years. The president also mentioned the “Light for Africa” program that the government introduced in 2009. Under the program, Taiwan promised to donate 145,000 solar-powered lamps to the West African country.
President Ma said Taiwan has already given away 126,000 lamps, which is nearly 90% of the promised donation.
“We will continue offering assistance until the work is 100% complete," said Ma.
Taiwan and Burkina Faso have cooperation in agriculture, medical care and vocational training.
Burkina Faso is scheduled to hold legislative and presidential elections in October.
