The government has unveiled its first white paper on the problem of Taiwan’s aging society. The report, released Thursday, will be used as a guideline for building a healthy, happy and friendly environment for Taiwan’s aging population.
The white paper is focused on medical care, long-term care, the participation of the elderly in society and the growth of specialized businesses serving the elderly.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Chiang Been-huang says that the public and the private sector should work together to cope with the demographic change.
“We hope that there will be public investment," said Chiang.
"On the one hand, investment will help build businesses that serve the needs of the elderly. On the other hand, it will give young people more job opportunities. On the whole, we hope that the entire push including the efforts of the public will build up businesses serving the elderly with the [help] of the private sector, social enterprises, NGOs and the government as well.”
Chiang said 8% of Taiwan’s population over the age of 65 is in the workforce.
