Taiwan will actively seek to join the second round of talks to be included in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
The TPP is a US-led multilateral free trade agreement currently being negotiated among 12 Pacific countries. Head of Taiwan’s Bureau of Foreign Trade, Jenni Yang, said on Friday US scholars expect that TPP negotiations will be completed in August. This is because the US Senate passed the Trade Promotion Authority, which gives President Barack Obama the power to “fast-track” talks on trade agreements such as the TPP.
Yang said that Taiwan must seek to join the second round of TPP negotiations. She also said the Bureau of Foreign Trade has been briefing trade associations on Taiwan’s bid to join the TPP.
