President Ma Ying-jeou says the government is planning to set up a museum to commemorate the nation’s heroes.

The president was speaking on Wednesday while attending the memorial service of Yan Hsiu-feng, the widow of anti-Japanese hero Lee You-bang.

Lee was born in the Japanese colony of Taiwan and left for China to fight against Japan in the Second Sino-Japanese War. After he came back to Taiwan, Lee was falsely accused of colluding with the communists and was later executed during the White Terror era. His widow was also imprisoned. Their names were eventually cleared in 2005.

During her lifetime, Lee’s widow had hoped that all of the anti-Japanese heroes would be commemorated in a national museum. During Wednesday’s memorial service, President Ma said that the government is planning to set up a military museum to pay tribute to all the national heroes who fought against foreign aggression.
