Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) has criticized China for passing a controversial law that undermines Taiwan's sovereignty.
China's National People's Congress, its rubber-stamp parliament, passed a national security law Wednesday. One of the articles of the law says "Safeguarding China's sovereignty and territorial integrity is the common obligation of all Chinese people, including people in Hong Kong and Macau as well as Taiwan."
China sees Taiwan as part of its territory, even though the two sides have been ruled separately for more than 60 years. Beijing has also said it will take Taiwan by force if necessary.
In response, MAC Minister Andrew Hsia said China's move is "disrespectful" to Taiwan. He also said the MAC will lodge a protest with China.
