Family members of water park blast eligible for paid leave

The Cabinet says civil servants whose family members are victims of the recent water park explosion are eligible for a 20-day paid leave.

The Cabinet made the announcement on Monday.

The devastating explosion took place in late June at a water park in New Taipei City. The blast, caused by flammable colored powder, has left three dead, and nearly 500 injured, with more than 200 still in intensive care.

Cabinet spokesman Sun Lih-chyun said on Tuesday that the move to offer paid leave is a way of helping the burn victims and their family members through a difficult period.

Meanwhile, New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu has also decided to match the move and offer the same treatment to family members who are not civil servants. The money will come from donations, once the move receives approval from the city’s funding committee.
