Linfa and Chan-hom unlikely to hit Taiwan at the same time

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) says Tropical Storm Linfa and Typhoon Chan-hom are unlikely to hit Taiwan at the same time.

As of Wednesday morning, Linfa was located about 240 km southwest of the southern tip of the island. It was moving at a speed of 7 km per hour towards Hong Kong and China’s Guangdong province.

Meanwhile, as of Wednesday morning, Typhoon Chan-hom was located about 1,360 km southeast of the same area and was moving at a speed of 22 km per hour towards the northwest.

Meteorologist Lo Ya-yin said on Wednesday that the chances of the two storms striking Taiwan at the same time are slim.

“The sea warning for Linfa is likely to be lifted on Thursday if the storm stays on the same path," said Lo.

"However, we are not ruling out the possibility of lifting the warning earlier if it moves slightly toward the south or west during the daytime," she said. "Also, there’s a good chance that we will issue a land warning for Typhoon Chan-hom on Thursday morning.”

Chan-hom is expected to have its biggest impact on northern Taiwan on Friday and Saturday. There were already reports of heavy rainfall in the eastern county of Taitung and southern county of Pingtung on Wednesday.
