Taiwanese athletes have picked up their first gold and silver medals at the Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea. Both medals came in the archery competitions on Wednesday. That brings the total for Chinese Taipei – which is the name of Taiwan team – to four.
The Women’s Recurve Team picked up a gold medal, beating South Korea 5-3. The Men’s Recurve Team came second to South Korea to win silver.
The other two medal winners from Taiwan are both women. Wu Chia-ying picked up a bronze in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol competition, while taekwondo athlete Liao Wen-hsuan won bronze in the Women’s Individual Poomsae competition.
A total of 237 Taiwanese athletes are competing in 16 events at the biennial Summer Universiade. The event, also known as the World University Games, will last through July 14.
