Taiwanese athletes prepare for closing matches of Universiade
Taiwan at the 2015 Summer Universiade

Athletes representing Taiwan at the ongoing Universiade have begun preparing for their final matches as the games begin winding down.

As in most international sporting events, athletes representing Taiwan at the Universiade, or the World University Games, compete under the name “Chinese Taipei” for political reasons.

This year’s games are being held in Gwangju, South Korea. Chinese Taipei teams have reached the finals or semifinals in a number of events this year.

Hsu Chieh-yu and Lee Ya-hsuan defeated a Japanese team in the women’s tennis semifinals on Friday, and will advance to face host South Korea in the finals.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Taipei baseball team will also face South Korea in the semifinals on Friday after defeating Mexico, the US and the Czech Republic in preliminary matches.

This year’s men’s volleyball team, which has performed better than any Taiwan has fielded in past Universiade games, will be facing Ukraine in a semifinal match of their own on Friday.

The women’s table tennis team will be taking on China in the finals Friday, and Taiwanese sprinter Chen Chieh will participate in the finals for the 400m dash.
