President announces speech at Harvard on eve of overseas trip
At the helm

President Ma Ying-jeou has announced that he will be giving a speech at Harvard University during an eight-day overseas trip set to begin on Saturday.

Ma said Friday that he plans to discuss issues including cross-strait relations, tensions in the South China Sea, and the state of the East Asia region during his remarks. Ma said that with the 70th anniversary of the Pacific War’s end approaching, he also plans to express his thanks to the United States for helping the Republic of China during its fight against Japan.

Ma will also visit three of Taiwan’s Caribbean and Latin American allies. He will give an address to the Congress of the Dominican Republic. In Haiti, Ma will attend a ceremony marking the opening of the newly rebuilt Supreme Court building. The original was destroyed in the 2010 earthquake that leveled much of the Haitian capital. Ma also plans to visit Taiwanese-capitalized businesses operating in Nicaragua.

While abroad, Ma will meet with the heads of state of the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Nicaragua to discuss bilateral relations and global affairs.
